“I will always support the incredible men and women of law enforcement as much as you have always supported me, and you did, big league,” Trump said at the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. “You are entitled to leadership at the highest level that will draw a bright line in the sand, not a red line in the sand that isn’t gone over, but a bright line in the sand, and we will protect you.”
Trump’s promise came on the heels of a spate of deaths at the hands of law enforcement officials. By mid-May, 362 people had been killed by police in 2017. He called it his “personal priority” to protect law enforcement officers, saying that many people throughout the country use “reckless words of incitement that give rise to danger and give rise to incitement.” Trump also claimed that some people don’t believe that it’s “politically correct” to stand with law enforcement officials, a statement that had critics scrambling to condemn the president.
During his speech, Trump promised to light The White House in blue and named the following week “Police Week,” asking state governors to fly American flags at half-staff in memorial to fallen police officers.
What Do You Think?
Do you think President Trump’s words at the police event were designed to stir up his supporters and rustle his critics, or do you think his message was a unifying one? I’d love to hear your thoughts, so please feel free to share them on my Facebook page or on Twitter.
President Donald Trump promised to draw a “bright line in the sand” to protect law enforcement officials all over the U.S. in mid-May, revisiting the same ideas he floated during his campaign about the “war on police.”
