on unarmed civilians—people who were only there to enjoy the club’s “Latin Night.”

The result: the deadliest mass shooting in United States’ history. Fifty people were killed and 53 were injured before the gunman was killed in a shootout with police.

The shooter, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, allegedly called 911 during the attack and pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State; according to 911 operators, he also mentioned the Boston Marathon bombing in2013.

But this is part of a broader debate.

Should Americans be allowed to own “assault rifles”?

Critics say no, including New York Daily News journalist Gersh Kuntzman.

“But what if a weapons manufacturer could fashion a handgun that would fire a nuclear blast — an atomic version of an AR-15, if you will. It would look like a gun, but it could kill thousands instead of dozens. Like a rifle, it's one of many arms that we are allowed to keep and bear. But would we really stand idly by as people buy a nuclear gun in the name of the Second Amendment?” writes Kuntzman about American citizens’ rights to bear arms.

Is stricter gun control the answer? The NRA doesn’t think more gun regulations would have stopped the attack. In fact, Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, pinned the tragedy on the Obama administration and political correctness.

What does the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, an NRA supporter, think? Rather than mourn the victims, Donald Trump tweeted, “Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don’t want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!”

Trump’s ‘I-told-you-so’ tweet came just a day after he suggested Obama sympathizes with terrorists, saying, “‘He doesn’t get it or, or he gets it better than anybody understands. It’s one or the other. And either one is unacceptable.’’

Naturally, Trump simply added more fuel to the fire in the wake of a tragedy—but who’s right?

I’d love to hear what you think about “assault weapons” and whether Americans should be allowed to own them, so share your thoughts on my Facebook page or on Twitter.
