Prison Escapes: Should We All Be Worried?
While the recent prison escape in New York resulted in one escapee dead and the other back in custody (in maximum security, no less), the pair were on the run for quite some time before law enforcement professionals caught up with them.
In Mississippi, four young men escaped from the Raymond Detention Center and two of them are still at large. Apparently, according to law enforcement, they had help from the inside and outside, just as the escapees from New York did.
That leaves one question: is this recent rash of escapes cause for us to become alarmed?
How Many People Escape from Prison in the U.S. Each Year?
There are more than 1.5 million people behind bars in the U.S., and between 2,000 and 2,500 of them escape each year, according to the Bureau of Justice.
Most escapes aren’t as complicated – or as dangerous – as those that have made recent news. In fact, most escapes are “walk-aways.” These happen in community correctional facilities that have little supervision.
A larger number (as many as 1,300 per year in New Jersey, for example) aren’t actually counted as escapes because they involve inmates in halfway houses leaving and never coming back.
The vast majority of escapees are caught and returned to jail or prison.
What Do You Think?
Are you concerned about the number of inmates who escape from jails and prisons across the U.S.? If you are, what could we do to minimize escapes and keep convicted criminals behind bars? I’d love to hear what you think, so share your thoughts on my Facebook page. With recent news of prison escapes in New York, Mississippi and in various other locations around the country (and in Mexico), it makes sense to question the security levels at our prisons – and to question the training and knowledge of
the guards tasked with protecting society
