A jury in California awarded a couple more than $2 billion in damages after determining that Monsanto, a subsidiary of Bayer, produced Roundup herbicide that caused them to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The weed-killer, made with a chemical called glyphosate, is used widely on the produce we eat every day – but for the most part, it comes off with washing or soaking and doesn’t make its way into food.

But the couple used the herbicide on their own crops, and the jury agreed that it was the use of the herbicide that caused their cancers.

Monsanto has been sued two other times in the past year. The first and second were in San Francisco, where a jury awarded $80 million to a man whose cancer stemmed from using the same weed-killer. Six months later, another jury awarded $289 million to another plaintiff.

Bayer, which owns Monsanto, is appealing all the verdicts against it.

“Bayer is disappointed with the jury's decision and will appeal the verdict in this case, which conflicts directly with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's interim registration review decision released just last month, the consensus among leading health regulators worldwide that glyphosate-based products can be used safely and that glyphosate is not carcinogenic, and the 40 years of extensive scientific research on which their favorable conclusions are based,” the company said in a statement.

The U.S. government says that Roundup is safe, but in 2016, Monsanto spent $4.6 million lobbying in Washington. In 2015, a United Nations science agency – the International Agency for Research on Cancer – determined that Roundup is likely to cause cancer.

Champions of the verdicts say that Monsanto deserves every bit of what it’s getting. Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group, said, “The cloud hanging over Bayer will only grow bigger and darker, as more juries hear how Monsanto manipulated its own research, colluded with regulators and intimidated scientists to keep secret the cancer risks from glyphosate.”

What Do You Think?

Do you feel like Roundup is safe and this is just a conspiracy against Bayer and Monsanto, or do you believe that Monsanto actually has manipulated its own research and lobbied its way into the EPA? I’d love for you to share your thoughts on this, so join me on Facebook or on Twitter and chime in!
