October’s big Powerball winner, Lerynne West, has donated $500,000 to The Travis Mills Foundation, a Maine-based charity that offers programs to disabled veterans. West announced her donation on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in mid-November.

West, who won the October 27 drawing with a ticket she bought in New York City, split the jackpot with one other person. Her winnings were the third-highest in the game’s 26-year history at $343.9 million.

She also established The Callum Foundation, which she says is devoted to helping charitable organizations and causes.

“My dad was a Vietnam vet,” West told DeGeneres. “I come from a long line of people who have served in the military. I think it's very important to see that we never forget the sacrifices that our soldiers and families make to our country.”

The Travis Mills Foundation, whose mission is to “support America’s recalibrated heroes,” offers long-term programs to help vets overcome physical obstacles, strengthen families and provide rest and relaxation. They host retreats for combat-injured veterans at their fully accessible property in Maine.

West, a single mother of three who won the lottery just after buying her first home, is also focusing on funding work dealing with poverty, animal welfare and education.

What Do You Think?

What would you do if you won the Powerball jackpot? While it’s always fun to think about how you’d spend your winnings, I’d love to hear about what types of charities and organizations you’d support.
