Beto O’Rourke Says He’s Coming for Your Guns

By Carlos Gamino

Congressman and presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) made big waves at the last democratic presidential debate when he said, “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. You’re not going to be allowed to use it against your fellow Americans anymore.” When asked to clarify his position during an MSNBC interview, he said that the public would be required to participate in a mandatory buyback program that covers all semi-automatic weapons.

O’Rourke’s statements came on the heels of two mass shootings in his home state – one that killed 22 people at Walmart in El Paso and a shooting spree between Odessa and Midland that killed seven people.

As you might expect, that statement didn’t go over very well. A republican state representative from Texas, Briscoe Cain (R-128) immediately tweeted, “My AR is ready for you Robert Francis.” (O’Rourke’s given name is Robert Francis O’Rourke.)

Twitter removed the tweet, saying it violated the site’s rules against violent threats, but not before several users caught screenshots. O’Rourke responded first, too, saying, “This is a death threat, Representative. Clearly, you shouldn’t own an AR-15 – and neither should anyone else.”

It is against the law to threaten a presidential candidate, so if Cain’s remarks were a threat, he could be on thin ice. A representative for O’Rourke’s campaign told the Washington Post that staffers reported the tweet to the FBI.

“To protect the privacy of people who contact the FBI, we cannot confirm or deny any particular contact or the potential existence of an investigation,” said Tina Jagerson, a spokeswoman for the FBI in a statement. “As a general matter, though, allegations of criminal conduct are reviewed by the FBI for their merit, with consideration of any applicable federal laws. When warranted, the FBI takes appropriate action.”

What Do You Think?

Would you support a mandatory gun buyback program? Do you think that Rep. Cain threatened Beto O’Rourke, or do you think this has spun out of control? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, so please share your opinion on my Facebook page or  Twitter.
